The EGG vs. The BUBBLE

THE EGG CHAIR

I think we've all seen them, and you either love 'em or hate 'em. Well, I've always loved them. Maybe it's the hidden hippie in me? But the whole concept is really cool! You sit in this cozy egg like contraption, all curled up and protected. One day, about 3 years ago, I saw an original Lee West Alpha Stereo Egg Chair with the fiberglass shell at Lovefield Antique Mall. I had to have it, but where to put it? Then it hit me, what a fun chair for my son's room! And the best thing about it? It's eggactly (oooooh sorry, bad pun) what it sounds like: the Stereo Egg has speakers inside, where you can hook up your ipod (or back then, your 8-track) and play music.

So, I purchased it and there it sits (in the first photo). But I have two sons! And if you have two children of the same sex, who are 1 ½ years apart, you know you have to buy everything in pairs; the exact same thing so there is NO fighting. Finding another egg chair is no easy feat. But, about a month later, as I was having new carpet installed in their rooms, the carpet layer saw this chair. He told me that he has one at home just like it, and asked if I was interested. Well, YES! His son wanted a dirt bike or something instead, and so there you have it. He put it in his truck the next week and now both my sons have stereo egg chairs. Funny how it all works out in the end?!

THE BUBBLE CHAIR

A slightly rounder version of the Egg chair, the Hanging Bubble Chair was designed by Eero Aarnio in the 1960's. Above, is an original photo of the chair. With the exception of the television, this photograph looks like it could of been taken today! That striped wall, the floor lamp and the shag carpet are all very au courant, right?

Now, if they could figure out a way to add speakers to the bubble chair, I think they might have the perfect creation.

Living in A Shoe Box. Seriously.

In case it's taking you a second to realize it, yes, this is an actual room made entirely from cardboard. Huh. I wonder who thinks to do something like this? Well, his name is Jeroen van Mechelen of Studio JVM.  What a way to recycle, and do something totally unexpected! He's really thinking out of the box. (ewww....sorry, couldn't help it. bad pun I know.)

My favourite picture for last.

If you want to experience a little cardboard living at your own home, you can try it out with Leo Kempf Design's Conversation Table, shown below. You'll find it at 360See Gallery in Chicago, which specializes in sustainable art and is a member of the sustainable Furniture Council.

Bermuda Homestead

I don't know about most people, but I think Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones make a handsome couple. I know they have multiple homes, and live quite the "jet-set" life, so I was glad when Architectural Digest showed us, back in 2002, a peek inside their house in Bermuda.  They hired decorator Stephen Ryan to design it, and I think it's fantastic. Casual yet sophisticated, warm yet cool at the same time, it has  mix of styles and is full of texture.

Decorator Ryan describes their living room as a typically English palette, with plush fabrics and deep colours. Mulberry Home fabric was used for the drapes.Click on this image to enlarge, so you can view better the fantastic lucite cocktail table that holds a shell collection. Great idea!

What a rich, warm room. Not what I would expect for a Bermuda Beach Estate! Drapery plaid and dining chairs fabric from Mulberry Home.
