Bamboo Old & New

(image: cashon & co)

I remember a few years back my mom said she was looking for a small bamboo shelving unit, preferably vintage or antique, to put in a bathroom at her house. She said she needed more storage for linens and such for guests. When she told me to be on the look-out for one, and one at a decent price, I knew exactly what she wanted and knew exactly where to go. I had seen one previously that I thought would be perfect for her at a local antique warehouse called Found And yes, it was exactly what she was looking for. Here it is above.

I think she had a great idea to have some exposed shelving in this bathroom. The towels look nice out in the open, and having "non-bathroom" furniture in a bathroom is ALWAYS a good look in my opinion. If this appeals to you,  I posted three options below in three different price points. My advice is to always scour the antique malls and warehouses and consignment stores, as that is where a lot of the bargains exist. But you can always find some great deals on-line too!

Bamboo & Rattan shelves with tortoise stain, available here for $695 from Gumps

Antique English bamboo shelves, $316 from here

New bamboo shelves, available here for only $100

Vacation Thoughts

The Wharf, Orange Beach, Alabama

Well, I have been on a mental, physical and blogging vacation lately, and I am ready to get back in the ring. I miss all my on-line friends and my blog-reading routine; I miss the comraderie, the creativity, the brilliant ideas of others, the glamorous and provoking photos, the poignant and humorous words and rantings, and the expanse of information that is out there, free for all to read.

But if you are a design blog follower, you might feel as I do: it's hard to keep up the posts on silly things such as fashion and fabrics now that one of our fellow bloggers is gone. For those of us who were BIG fans of the blog HOLDING COURT then you also feel like I do: there's a void with Marija gone. Not only was she a woman of great style and taste, but more importantly she was a mother and wife who proudly made it known that her family was her love and her life. I think one of my favourite posts she wrote was her father's day ode called The Reach of a Father. It shows her essential love of family as her priority. She was real and solid,  her genuine nature was evident to even on-line buddies such as me.

So after almost 2 weeks of figuring out how to approach blogging again, when it seems so trivial sometimes, I spent some time talking with other bloggers and re-reading some of Marija's posts. She had a real passion for building and decorating her home, and a love of good design, so I think with that in mind, I am ready to jump back in and start writing about what I am passionate about, the same things she was passionate about: Family, Hope, Relationships, Beauty, Design, Friends, Decorating, Bargains, Happiness and Writing/Self-Expression.

So with that in mind, while I'm on vacation in the HOT & Steamy Gulf Coast, I thought it appropriate to start off all things Summer to me..... Yes, at the end of July, but where I'm from it doesn't start cooling down until the end of October. So....

THESE ARE ALL MY FAVORITE  THINGS THAT SAY "SUMMERTIME'S HERE"! ....
(and how many days left until school starts again?)

...A FRESH SMELLING HOME

This room spray by Asquith & Somerset of England is perhaps the most delicious and summery type smell you could imagine. Coconut and Banana? YUM! I save it for the summer months only.

Hillhouse Naturals and Pier One Imports make the most potent and best smelling diffusers in my opinion.  Mango is always a great yummy smell to me. It's subtle but fresh, and sometimes florals make my stomach queasy. With this diffuser, my home smells tropical.

SPECIAL HAIR CARE: UV PROTECTION AND CONDITIONING MASQUES

You can't beat Kérastase Soleil for taking care of your hair when you are in the beach or pool this summer.... or just out in the sun. Before I go to the beach or pool, I slick my hair back in a low bun and heavily apply their Gelee Aqua-Proof Filtre UV and also mist my hair with their Micro Voile Protecteur Light Mist or their Aqua Protective Spray too. I have to make sure I get my scalp too because trust me, you do not want a sunburned scalp. When it peels, oh brother.... you can imagine. But I just purchased the L'Oreal Everstrong Sulfate-Free Deep Replenishing Masque and at less than half the price of Kérastase, I think it is just as good....and dare I say, even better?

I also like Bumble & Bumble's Seaweed Shampoo and Conditioners, as well as their Creme de Coco line. They just smell like a summer should smell.... and they are a little bit more conditioning too. And you used to be able to only get it at the salon, but I now Target carries it. Woo-hoo!

MAKE MY LATTES ICED, PLEASE

Although I like my Nespresso maker better, this Francis! Francis! machine makes espresso the old-fashioned way...with a press. And it looks great on the counter. I quit my Starbucks habit about a year ago by making my own. It's easier, more convenient and saves me a LOT of dough.

KEEP MY DOORS OPEN... BUT THE SCREEN DOOR CLOSED

They say the mosquito down here on the Gulf Coast is the National Bird.....they're not kidding. That is why screened in porches are so popular here. Also, we've got the "no see-ums" which if you're from the South, you know what those are. They bite and sting, but they're practically invisible!! So, I've had this Two's Company jute door stop for a couple years now, and I think it is the best looking door stopper out there. And with the handle and it's weighted bottom, it's easy to pick up and remove.

I LIKE TO COOK AND ENTERTAIN MORE... BUT IT HAS TO BE EASY

I am not a big cook (I prefer baking actually) but when I do it has to be easy. I do tend to cook more on vacation, because there is more time and I feel more relaxed. I really like the recipes from Coastal Living Magazine and of course Ina Garten's recipes from House Beautiful inspire me so much. I think the best cookbooks though are the southern cookbooks. My favourites are Peace Meals (Houston Jr. League), Stop and Smell the Rosemary (Houston Jr. League),  and Thyme to Remember (Dallas County Medical Society). My friend Annette in Houston gave me the first two, and they are by far standards in my kitchen, especially Stop and Smell the Rosemary. Yummy!

One of my favourtie summer time treats is fresh berries and cream. Wouldn't that be fun to serve it in these individual trifle-style bowls from Uncommon Goods?

Nothing says Summer like fresh Coconut Macaroons. I find that Whole Foods Grocery has the yummiest ones. Even better than the ones in China Town, San Francisco.

My next door neighbors are from New York, so they spend the summers back East in the Hamptons (*sigh, must be nice....). But she is soooo sweet and thoughtful and every time she comes back she brings us the incredibly delicious cookies from Tate's Bake Shop in South Hampton. They are thin and crispy and you can taste the brown sugar. My poor kids, didn't get a bite. Mommy ate the WHOLE bag.

I love pulling out my vintage cocktail napkins and sitting with my girlfriends while drinking Pinot Grigio Spritzers or chilled Spanish Sparkling wine Cristalino. My mom's friend gave me this set of linen and organdy ones with sweet embroidered strawberries on them. I love them!

These fun aperitif glasses were my grandmothers, and they are probably from the 1950's. I have a set of 6 from her, and each cube is a fun bright colour. They sat useless for years on our shelf until my husband discovered that they make the PERFECT glasses for sipping chilled Tequila. (Remember, we're in Texas. We do that kind of thing.)

These carafes were a bargain at $12.95 from a local store. It's amazing how just putting water in a neat carafe on the dinner table when you have guests over makes such a casual yet elegant setting. Reminds me of Summers in Spain.... Everything was served in carafes.

I LIKE TO READ MORE.... BUT IT CAN'T BE HEAVY

Lots of Agatha Christie for me and cruising the NY Times best seller lists for some fun reading.

And LOTS & LOTS of magazines.

BRING THE BRIGHT FUN COLOURS OUT OF THE CLOSET!

I found this cute Costume National dress on Ebay recently. I just need to go out to dinner more so I have an excuse to wear it!

Some of my favourite go-to shoes. I love when designers line shoes and clothes in a "shocking" colour. It makes it more fun to put on, right?

I have had my nails natural for so long, I am ready to try every shade of pink, purple, and coral this summer. I think this colour also looks great in the cold winter months.

WEAR FUN JEWELRY.... AND IF YOU'RE TAN, MAKE IT GOLD

Ahhhh, my late night QVC purchase: two awesomely gorgeous Kenneth Jay Lane bracelets. I also bought one for my mom. They stretch so it works great for all wrist sizes and if you've never purchased a KJL product, he does costume jewelry right. It's good quality and good design. You can find his vintage pieces for sale on-line and it seems his pieces never go out of style.

And I think summer time is the perfect time to wear fun, inexpensive flashy jewelry like these bangles that were under $20 for all three.

I love this mother of pearl ring I bought a few years back, in which the base is actually a shell carved out. It is by Mesi Jilly and there are some more similar ones here at Vivre.

I LIKE TO ADD SOME FUN "BEACHY" TOUCHES TO MY HOME

On Ebay I love to look for vintage lusterware porcelain, like this little c.1940's bather sitting on a seashell. It's inexpensive and it makes a cute little container on a vanity for Q-tips.

And my husband as well as myself both had grandparents that quilted, therefore we have inherited quite a few quilts. Instead of keeping them in a closet, I like to use them! As tablecloths for dinner, picnics, and seating at the beach and football games. I have washed them several times, and if you wash it delicately and don't put them in the dryer, I think they hold up quite well.

Sea urchins are such a nice alternative to coral and you can find them inexpensively at big Souvenir Shops on coastal towns. They look beautiful in formal settings too!

But you know I don't give up my coral easily! And how fun is it to display them casually like this in old glass compotes and vases?

My girlfriend Deanna gave me this silver trimmed clam shell 2 years ago and I keep it always next to my kitchen sink. It is the catch-all for my change, rings, chapstick, prescriptions, you name it. But I always keep this angel token, that a stranger gave to me in-line at a Smoothie King about 5 years ago.

And this used to be a lamp that I found on my last rip to Marburger. I took out the bulb and just keep it out as is. I love the little lucite stand on it. Isn't it amazing how once you put a simple object such as this ordinary shell on a display stand it all of a sudden makes it look special and sculptural?

OR SOME POPS OF BRIGHT SKY-BLUE AND SEA-TURQUOISE COLOURS!

Again, I spotted these at Marburger. I just thought it was magnificent on so many levels. The earthiness of the colour and texture of the terra-cotta pillars against the smoothness of the rich sea-blue pottery....I can just imagine these in an entry of a home with some blooming branches in them, flanking a center table with a bowl on it filled with lemons. Oh, and let's not forget some orchids and palms nearby! So Palm Beach!!

A different hue of blue, that also adds a freshness to the hot months. I love old Bristol glass, and this vase  just looks so cool and delicious to me. With some hot pink peonies, I think it would take center-stage on any table.

And as I had posted earlier about using lamps in a shocking blue glass, this one as well just gives new life to what is an otherwise old-fashioned and somewhat drab table. And to keep it contemporary and current, this drum-shape shade is the perfect fit for this vintage milk-glass lamp.

SUMMERTIME? ROAD TRIP PLEASE!

If motorcycling around the country is not your thing (I've done it once.... once is enough!) then hop in the car with the family, take a deep breath, and drive across the country with the brood. Actually, it's the best time to take a road trip with your friends too! I shared in a past post how I once drove from Texas to Las Vegas in a suburban with 4 of my girlfriends and it was the most memorable 2 weeks that I will never forget.)

It is on these small stop-overs in random towns that you are sure to experience strange and unusual things, indicative of course of the wonderful variety of what is typical to America!

Just be careful of these Southern towns, where law enforcement LOVE to give out tickets. There is NO mercy there. Even with kids in the car. Not that I know ANYTHING about this personally.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, TIME WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY!

Time with girlfriends is precious and rare.... Don't ever take these times you have together for granted!

A natural occurrence in California, with my son and the daughter of my college friend and former roommate; completely un-staged and the sweetness of this just makes my heart smile.

I love the slow pace of summertime where walking the dog is not a chore, but a playdate.

And thank goodness for Lego's! After years of building Star Wars Legos, I was so excited to see them come out with an Architectural line, and to my surprise, my boys LOVE them! So far, in a matter of 2 days, they have built the Empire State Building, The Seattle Space Needle, The White House, and the Guggenheim Museum, shown above. If you have a little guy the age of 7-12, these are neat because they  get them interested in important landmarks. I never thought I'd hear my 9 year old son squeal with delight whilst saying the words "Guggenheim" and "White House". Seriously!

And let's not forget about making new friends.... like "Mr. Buddy" here. He was a new member of our family for about a day. Then he went back to his frog family. The school year is so hurried and we are all so stressed that something so simple as looking for frogs is not on the calendar then, but that's what's so great about summer. We can slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. Like our Family, our Friends, making new friends, doing new things, seeing new places, and watching the stars while eating cookie dough and drinking root-beer and staying up till midnight watching The Three Stooges together as a family.
