Rockers: Then & Now

I should re-name this title "Rockers & MY MEMORIES OF THEM: Then & Now"....

I remember back in the day getting to go to the record store and picking out a new album. I usually bought 45's, but sometimes my mom would let me buy 33's.

BLONDIE

Deborah Harry, then and now.
I started listening to Blondie in 1980, and in 1983 I died my hair white and wore electric blue eye-liner.

I had this 45 record. I remember I wanted that tube top with the crystals on it.
I remember singing this song in the Jack in the Box Drive Through sitting in the back of my mom's Jeep CJ-7, while my teenage cousin drove it. We had the music blasting and this song playing, and we would go really fast over the bumps in the road so my brother & I would hit our heads on that roll bar and hold on with our hands. There you go mom, there's the truth of our summers driving around in that Jeep with no seatbelt speeding down Northhaven Road.

MY FAVOURITE BLONDIE SONGS:

(I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear
Die Young, Stay Pretty
Dreaming
Fade Away and Radiate
Hanging on the Telephone
Heart of Glass
One Way or Another
Rapture
Rip Her to Shreds
Sunday Girl
The Hardest Part
The Tide is High
Atomic
Call Me

See her sing on SOLID GOLD, 1981 (yes, THAT Solid Gold!)

THE ROLLING STONES

I remember a picture like this being on the back of my "Waiting on a Friend" 45 single. I don't know why, but in 5th grade, I thought that skull ring Richards was wearing was SO cool. Maybe it was because I was really into concert t-shirts and 'Member's Only'. I remember sitting in the back seat of the station wagon on the way back from Piano Lessons, and my mom let me buy this single. I distinctly remember this conversation like it was yesterday:
"Mom, I think I have found a new idol. It is Keith Richards."
(Not smiling a bit, and glaring in the rear view mirror)
"I think you should choose your Idols more wisely".

MY FAVOURITE STONE SONGS:

Satisfaction
Angie
As Tears Go By
Beast of Burden
Brown Sugar
Emotional Rescue
Hang Fire
Honky Tonk Women
It's Only Rock n' Roll
Let's Spend the Night Together

Under My Thumb
Waiting on a Friend
You Can't Always Get What You Want

DAVID BOWIE

Did you know that Bowie has two different coloured eyes? You can really tell in this photo.

I have to say this about Bowie's wife IMAN. I had the pleasure of meeting her about 3 years ago in a very small intimate environment. I was on the board of directors for the first Dallas chapter of the non-profit business Dress for Success. It is a wonderful cause, which helps women learn work skills and pick out free clothes from donations who are just re-entering the work place due to hardships, homelessness, bankruptcy, incarceration, any reason really. We had a boutique here that we set up where we would have meetings with the women, and set them up with interview skills and new outfits for interviews and jobs. It was really inspiring.
Well, IMAN Cosmetic donates a percentage of her profits to Dress for Success and she is REALLY involved. She flew down to Dallas to meet a group of women for a beauty workshop. Our office is not glamourous, it was not publicized, and she showed up and stayed for a very long time. I had heard stories from local hairdressers and such that she was a diva not to be reckoned with -- that she made make-up artists and hairdressers cry. I was scared to meet her. She couldn't of been more of the opposite. We were somewhat unorganized and she didn't complain one bit and was quite gracious, sincere, and of course absolutely STUNNING. She gave the most heartfelt inspirational talk to these ladies that I think we all took something from. I just really like her now and it makes me like David Bowie even more too. What a couple.

I LOVED this album. They played it on MV3 all the time. NOT MTV, but the syndicated MV3. Anyone remember that show?
MY FAVOURITE BOWIE SONGS:

"Steve Perry is so OOH-LA-LA!" That was the caption on my friends Teen Beat magazine she had in her room on Carriage Ln. (Remember that Jennifer?) I had a shirt like this too, but it was a Q102 jersey.

David Lee Roth. Oh MY. He was the ultimate "high kick splits in the air in spandex with big hair" rock god, wasn't he?

And talk about Guitar Hero. Eddie V is the only guitar solo that I will pull out my air guitar to.

This is me circa the JUMP album. That look on my face is because my little brother barged in and took a surprise picture of me. I have to make a disclaimer. Winged hair was really in back then. hahahah Apparently we did our homework on the floor? Looks so uncomfortable! I remember every stuffed animal in there. The RCA dog. The pink pig. And my room was allllll purple.
