A Mixed-up Guest Room

Usually when I think of Neoclassical rooms, I think of very structured, stiff and still. Not that those are bad things, as I love Neoclassical and Classicism styles, but I find this room by Michael S. Smith very interesting, because it mixes Neoclassical furniture with a busy pattern on the wall, that has lots of movement and flow.

The bed in this guest-room is a 19th century Italian Neoclassical parcel-gilt piece, and sits very majestically in this old-European influenced room. Smith says that this room is quite a retreat from the rest of the Manhattan apartment, which is all very bright. He used a Brunschwig & Fils floral wallcovering, and added more pattern with an antique geometric rug, striped silk shades, and an occasional chair upholstered in a pattern also.
