DIY: Using Shells & Coral

I am a huge fan of Sea Fan Coral...so much so I even had a dream last night that I was in the souvenir shop in the Gulf Coast and that I was looking for the perfect specimen, but there were two girls from my high-school that were trying to kill me and they had me cornered in the aisle with all the clams and shells and the cashier wouldn't help me.... but I digress...... (upon re-reading this it sounds quite disturbing! I wonder what that all means? LOL!)

ANYWAYS.... If you like shells and coral like I obviously do,  I thought these were some cool examples of how to make them into something special for your home.

The above two images come from the ID Collection Showroom in the Dallas Design Center. I just happened to see these there a few months back while looking for fabric and it stopped me still in my tracks. Aren't they just stunning? The creator of these beauties used some 19th c. gilt decorative fragments and glued sea-fan coral and seashells to the top. That's it. And they are STUNNING. This was one of those "Why didn't I think to do this" moments.... And the older I get, the more frequent those moments come.

While in Marburger this past spring, I saw these two lovely displays - above and below - in a really fresh looking booth. Everything was whitewashed and breezy. The owner of this booth used vintage and antique frames, some with the original convex glass, and simply put specimens inside.

Can you see how she had them grouped closet together on the wall? What a statement! As much as I like coral, these sand dollars above on the seafoam-coloured fabric just really look exceptional. Don't you think?

I have had two brown c.1910 frames such as the one above, with original convex glass, in my closet for two years now, ready and waiting for my project that has never materialized. I want to line the back in a natural linen and display my son's collection of  shark teeth in it, and hang it in his bathroom. *sigh....

Just another thing on my list that I seem to never get done! Maybe one day in the next decade I'll get it done... and if I do, I'll share it... but only if it turns out good. Ha!
